Infrastructure habits that save you at 3 AM

infrastructure / operations

Most infrastructure failures are boring. A disk fills up. A certificate expires. A dependency that everyone forgot about goes down. The difference between a minor incident and a long night is rarely the technology. It is the habits.

The short list

Everything restarts cleanly. If a service cannot survive a reboot without manual intervention, it is not deployed, it is merely running. Test restarts regularly, on purpose.

Logs you can actually read. Structured, timestamped, and shipped somewhere that survives the host dying. The worst time to set up log shipping is during an incident.

Backups you have restored from. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a backup. Schedule restore drills the way you schedule maintenance.

One obvious place for state. When something breaks at 3 AM, you should not have to remember which of five machines holds the data that matters.

Alerts that mean something. Every alert should correspond to an action. If the correct response to an alert is to ignore it, delete the alert.

None of these require expensive tooling. All of them require deciding, in advance, to take the boring option.
